A helicopter crashes over a building in Manhattan, New York, killing its commander

A helicopter crashed over a building in the Manhattan neighborhood of New York City on Monday, and its leader immediately died.

New York Governor Andrew Kiyomo said the initial information indicated a forced landing of the helicopter on the roof of the building and a fire, noting that residents of the building "felt a great shock but no one was hurt," according to CNN.

"While the helicopter was trying to land on the roof, fire broke out, but the firefighters took over," Como said.

"The pilot of the helicopter died after the accident" on Manhattan's Seventh Street near Times Square, the station quoted the fire department as saying.
"There are casualties as a result of the incident, but the number has not yet been determined," the New York governor said.

He pointed out that initial reports of the incident had raised concern, but stressed that there was no indication that the incident was a "terrorist act".

"Bad weather prevailed at the time of the accident, where there was heavy rain and clouds, making it difficult to identify the top of the skyscraper where the plane fell," the German news agency reported.

New York police have asked the public to avoid the area.
