The Thai government on Tuesday decided to lift martial law in some parts of the country, Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont told reporters. It was decided to impose martial law, which severely restricted public freedoms in the country, during the military coup that toppled the government of Thaksin Shinawatra on September 19 last. "The government approved the recommendation of the National Security Council (and the name given by the military council to itself) to lift martial law in some parts of the country," said the prime minister appointed by the military junta.
