WASHINGTON (Reuters) – US President Donald Trump threatened on Tuesday (June 25, 2019) to wipe out parts of Iran if the latter attacked "anything American" while Iran said the new US sanctions aborted all diplomatic opportunities.

"Any attack from Iran on anything American will meet with a strong and overwhelming force," Trump said in a tweet on Twitter, days after a US attack on Iranian targets was halted. "In some areas, sweeping means erasure"He said.

As part of the ongoing escalation, Trump signed an executive order on Monday imposing sanctions on Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and senior officials. It is expected that sanctions will be imposed on Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Jawad Zarif in the coming days.

In a speech broadcast live on state television on Tuesday, Iranian President Hassan Rowhani said sanctions on Khamenei would have no practical impact because he had no assets abroad. Rohani described US actions as signs of US desperation and described the White House's actions as "mentally retarded." "The actions of the White House show that it is mentally retarded," Rouhani said. "Tehran's strategic patience does not mean we are afraid."
