The Iranian Foreign Ministry confirmed Monday (July 8, 2019) that the third phase of the reduction of obligations under the nuclear agreement will be "more firm."

In his weekly press conference, foreign ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi said: "If the remaining countries in the nuclear agreement, especially the European Union, have not fulfilled their obligations and will have only dealt with the issue, Iran will take the third step and be stronger and more assertive."

Moussaoui said that if Paris, London and Berlin, parties to the nuclear agreement, "to take some strange behavior, then we will move beyond the next steps and move directly to the implementation of the last step."

Moussaoui denied that there is any talk about new negotiations or new topics to negotiate, and added: "The nuclear agreement continues within the framework of 5 + 1 and 4 + 1, and therefore the talk is only about how to implement the terms of the agreement," noting that an adviser to French President Emmanuel Macaron May visit Iran in the coming days.

Iran announced yesterday the implementation of the second step of reducing its commitments under the nuclear agreement, which was to raise uranium enrichment above the level of 3.67% stipulated in the agreement reached with the major powers in 2015.

The decision to resume uranium enrichment at a banned level is one of the elements of Iran's response to Trump's decision in May 2018 to unilaterally withdraw from the agreement and re-impose US sanctions under which Tehran was removed.

Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araji gave Iran's partners a "60-day" deal to reach a "solution" that would meet his country's demands, "otherwise we will launch the third phase" of the plan to cut pledges.

On the other hand, US President Donald Trump on Sunday warned Iran of violating the maximum uranium enrichment specified in the nuclear agreement. "Iran has to be careful, because it is enriching for one reason, and I will not say what that is, but it is not good," Trump told reporters in Morristown, New Jersey.
