In Germany, the number of asylum seekers and refugees reached 1.8 million by the end of 2018, the German Federal Statistical Office said on Thursday (July 18th). According to the office, the proportion of asylum seekers registered in Germany increased by 6 percent over the previous year, or 101 thousand people.

The Office said that humanitarian reasons are most conducive to the protection of researchers to come to Germany, noting that 71% of asylum seekers and refugees in Germany arrived in the last five years. 1.3 million of them received protection and thus the right of residence.

According to the statistics of the Office, about 62% of the holders of the right to protection in Germany came from three countries, namely Syria (526 thousand), Iraq (138 thousand) and Afghanistan (131 thousand).

According to OCHA data, the number of people whose asylum claims were not processed was 306,000 by the end of 2018. This is 269,000 fewer than in 2016, when the rate of asylum applications reached its peak. This is due to the acceleration of asylum procedures and the continued decline in the number of new asylum applications. There is a marked increase in the number of protection seekers in Germany from people coming from Turkey (14,000) and Iran (21,000).
