Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras of the leftist Syriac party has conceded defeat after parliamentary elections
Took place on Sunday (7 July 2019). "We accept the people's rule, we have made difficult decisions in order to reach Greece as it is today, and we have paid a heavy political price," Tsipras said. Tsipras claimed responsibility for the defeat.

In contrast, conservative leader Kyriakos Mitsutakis promised to "revive" Greece after a "painful" period experienced by the country during the government of leftist Alexis Tsipras and his party Sereza. "A painful page is coming today," said Mitsutakis, 51, after winning a clear victory in the Greek legislative elections over Tsipras.

Greece's conservative "New Democracy" party issued the results of the legislative elections on Sunday (July 7, 2019) against left-wing Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and his party, according to polls showing exit polls.

A joint poll by major television stations in Greece, the conservative New Democracy Party, showed 40 percent of the votes on the Sereza party, which had only 28.5 percent of the vote.

Greek Prime Minister Tsipras admits defeat.

If confirmed, the new Democracy Party led by Kyriakos Mitsutakis, a graduate of Harvard University and close to the business community, will have a majority of 167 of the 300 seats in parliament. Polls showed Tsepras could win 82 seats. Final figures remain subject to the small seats of the smaller parties.

These parties need at least 3 percent of the vote to enter parliament. Several parties are competing to enter parliament, including the Greek Solution, a nationalist party founded by Kerakos Philopoulos and the 25-member Merea 25 opposition party founded by Greek economist and former finance minister Yannis Farovacis.

The "Greek Solution" party could win 13 seats, such as the new "Golden Dawn" Nazi party, whose shares have fallen sharply because of a trial in which many senior officials face criminal charges.

The new Democratic Party last came to power in 2014, in an alliance with the Socialists.

Meetsutakis, son of former Prime Minister Kostantinos Mitsutakis and his sister Dora Bakoyannis, was foreign minister and mayor of Athens. The new mayor of Athens is his nephew Costas Bakoyannis. Sunday's election in Greece is the third in several months.

In May, the new Democratic Party won the Syriza party in the European Parliament elections by 9.5 percent. A week later, he won a landslide victory in local elections.
