Saudi Arabia's King Salman bin Abdul Aziz al-Saud has agreed to host US troops in the kingdom to boost security and stability in the region, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Saturday night (July 20, 2019). Which means the deployment of US troops on Saudi soil.

For its part, the Pentagon confirmed the step in a statement, saying it would send troops and resources to Saudi Arabia to provide an "additional deterrent" in the face of threats. The move comes amid rising tensions between Washington and Tehran in the Gulf from the US military deployment to attacks on oil tankers and the downing of marching planes, where the tension in the Gulf is heightened by the withdrawal of the United States in May 2018 of the nuclear agreement signed in 2015 and the imposition of US sanctions again on Tehran .

The official Saudi Press Agency quoted an official source as saying that the resolution aims to "raise the level of joint action in defense of the security and stability of the region and ensure peace."

A US official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the operation would involve sending about 500 US military personnel to Saudi Arabia and was part of a surge in US troops in the Middle East announced last month by the Pentagon.

The Pentagon announced in June that it would send 1,000 troops to the Middle East without mentioning where exactly.
